Savings CalculatorS
The primary reason many consumers purchase electric vehicles is to be environmentally sensitive, choosing to use no gasoline or diesel fuel, and to decrease emissions.
However, the significant savings in fuel and operating costs that an electric vehicle can offer is another factor in the decision to purchase an electric vehicle.
Below are some links that will assist in calculating the value of an electric vehicle. ZENN has a useful Savings Calculator that calculates the money you save on fuel. To use the calculator, you will need to know the average cost per kilowatt of electricity in your state. MILES has a more detailed Savings Calculator. This one takes into consideration operational costs NOT experienced with an electric vehicle (le.g. oil changes and periodic tune-ups of internal combustion engines) and the fractional cost of electric vehicle batteries.
Another area that electric vehicle offer savings is in reduced mechanical repair costs. Unfortunately, this is very hard to quantify. An electric vehicle has a fewer mechanical parts compared to an internal-combustion vehicle (e.g. no radiator, oil filter, oil lines, oil pan, emissions equipment, no spark plugs, no muffler, no tailpipe, etc.) and none of the hundreds of other parts in an internal-combustion engine that will at some point need repair or replacement as well as no emissions testing either,
